Just played Bushi no Yume and we had a good time I really liked the activation concept. However, we might have been doing combat wrong.
The issue is wounding an opponent. We had a Samurai with a bu of 3 with a Katana +2 fighting a Ninja who was also a 3 with a a Katana +2 so so far they seem to be even, then we add the ukemi ability with +2 for the Ninja. So now we have a 5 for the Samurai and a 7 for the ninja. With these numbers it is impossible for the samurai who rolls one d 6 to harm the Ninja. The samurai even if he rolls a 6 would only have an 11 while if the Ninja rolls a 1 it would have a 8 so no way for the Samurai to double the Ninjas roll? Are we doing something wrong, because what we had was a lot of pushing back but no real damage! Thanks William

Hi William
Sounds like you're doing it right....but.....
If using Ukemi then you cannot cause any damage to the samurai..
If in you're example if the samurai did roll a 6 (and beat the ninja...look at the combat results table on page 11 )....the 6 on the roll would mean that the ninja was "floored" and the samurai could follow up and next activation hopefully (with a good activation roll ) could attack the ninja, who would count as "floored" +2 to the samurai,( details on the top of page 12)

Thanks for the fast reply, that makes sense, so without a 6 the samurai can not do anything against the ninja!
So if a samurai fights another samurai with the bu of 3 and katana with a +2 each has a five, so unless a roll of 6 the only result is to push back the enemy! Is that correct?
Thanks I think that the optional rule of Dai Roku is probably a good addition.

Yes, you are correct in your thinking....
Also, don't forget the "Powerful blow", which is a -1 to your opponents Bu aswell (this will cost you 1 action though )

As answered before ... also the game is made to use the Dai Roku as a standard mechanic, playing without it makes it more 'historical' in feel with lots of push backs between matched opponents until some one gets lucky with a 6 or with a card
